Getting There

getting to the island

First, you should know, it really is an island – there are no tunnels or bridges connecting the Vineyard to the mainland, no traffic lights, no highways, no malls, and the highest speed limit is 45mph.

There are two ways to get to Martha’s Vineyard:

Option 1: Fly to the island.

Option 2: Take a ferry to the island.

By Air

The fastest, easiest option.

There are seasonal direct flights to Martha's Vineyard (MVY) from Boston,

New York, and Washington D.C. For more information on flights, including a list of airlines/airports that offer direct flights to Martha's Vineyard, click here.

By Sea

The Steamship Authority in Woods Hole, MA is the largest, most affordable ferry and offers the most frequent daily departures to Martha's Vineyard - it's also the only ferry that allows cars on board. If you are not bringing a car, you can buy a ticket for the ferry when you arrive at the dock.

COMING FROM BOSTON:

Once you land at Logan, you can rent a car or catch the Peter Pan bus, which takes you directly to the Steamship Authority port (about 2 hours) in Woods Hole, MA.

For the Peter Pan bus schedule from Logan to Woods Hole, MA - click here. You will need to buy this bus ticket in advance.

For the Steamship Authority ferry schedule, click here.

The ferry ride lasts about 45 minutes.

should i rent a car?

Renting or bringing your car is not necessary. If you're staying at one of the hotels in Edgartown, you do not need a car for the weekend, as your hotel will be within walking distance of restaurants, bars, shops, etc.

things to do in mv

Staying in Edgartown? Spend the day at South Beach, jump in the water at Jaw’s Bridge, and check out the shops on Main Street.

Venturing into Oak Bluffs? Ride the Flying Horses (the oldest operating carousel in America!), admire the cute Gingerbread Houses, order the lobster bake for dinner at the Net Result and grab some Backdoor Donuts for dessert.

Heading up-island to Menemsha? Hit Larsen’s for lobster rolls and eat on the dock, then grab some soft serve at the Galley.

Want to admire the beautiful ocean-side bluffs? Aquinnah is the town for you!

End the evening with Mad Martha’s (the best ice cream on the island) or Murdick’s for unbelievable fudge. There are endless ways to enjoy Martha’s Vineyard!
